Christchurch Earthquake Update

On 22 February 2011 at 12:51 a 6.3 magnitude aftershock hit Christchurch, causing significant damage and multiple fatalities. It followed nearly six months after the initial 7.1 magnitude earthquake on 4 September 2010 which caused widespread damage to the Canterbury region.

Christchurch’s central business district (CBD) was immediately evacuated and the area was cordoned off for several weeks. Some areas remain off-limits, affecting many families and businesses.

Christchurch Car Rental Unaffected

Fortunately our Christchurch car rental office is located near the airport and there was no significant damage to our building or any injuries to staff in either earthquake. We remain fully operational for all bookings from our Christchurch depot and Christchurch Airport.

Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy. We have been touched by the stories of courage, generosity and resilience that have emerged and believe Christchurch will recover and be stronger than ever.

Although parts of the CBD and some attractions remain closed, there is still so much to see and do in the Canterbury region.
