Christchurch is a city brimming with original history and character and is the gateway to the Canterbury region and the rest of the South Island. Although some areas have suffered earthquake damage the city is still a great place to visit with plenty to see and do. Just 20 minutes from the International Airport, Christchurch is easy to explore with an affordable rental car and your own transport will give you the freedom to discover great destinations further afield.
|Punting on the River Avon, Christchurch|
A favourite sight for both locals and tourists alike is of the boats punting up and down the tranquil River Avon, which carves a path through the heart of the city. Sit back, relax into the velvet cushions and let your Edwardian punter steer you along the leafy banks of the river through the beautiful Botanic Gardens, or experience a unique tour through Christchurch’s Red Zone from the City landing site.
The September 2010 and February 2011 earthquakes have left a small part of the central city inaccessible, and some attractions such as the iconic Christchurch Tram, most of the Arts Centre and Christchurch Art Gallery remain closed for the time being. However, the rebuild is in progress and many of the city’s popular attractions are still open or have recently reopened, including Cathedral Square, the Botanical Gardens, the Gondola and iconic New Regent Street. Check Find:Chch for an up to date map showing things to see and do.
Quirky projects designed to brighten up some of Christchurch’s empty urban plots under the ‘Gap Filler’ project have created some interesting hangouts, including the Pallet Pavilion on the corner of Kilmore and Durham Streets, and the Re:Start Mall on Cashel Street has a great vibe with quality retailers and markets.
If you still feel like giving the city a miss, Christchurch is a great starting point for trips to popular destinations such as Kaikoura, Hanmer Springs, Akaroa and Arthur’s Pass National Park.
