Great Things To Do On The North Shore

Life across the Auckland Harbour Bridge buzzes to a different tune. With so many great things to do on the North Shore, it can be tricky to know where to start. On this page you’ll find a handy crib sheet that features some of the most essential North Shore activities and excursions.

Explore The Whangaparoa Peninsuladevonport looking back to auckland

The Whangaparoa Peninsula is famed for its golden beaches and superb, world-class golf course. If you’re in the mood to soak up some of the famous natural beauty that draws tourists from across the world to New Zealand, then this is one of the best places to visit on the North Shore. Translated from Maori, the name “Whangaparoa” means Bay of Whales; you can often see orcas swimming in the waters around the peninsula. You can drive out to the peninsula and amble around the walking tracks in Shakespear Regional Park. For the ultimate Kiwi experience we recommend booking a BBQ area at the park and soaking up the scenery and sunshine.

Take A Guided Segway Tour Of Devonport

The historic seaside village of Devonport is considered by many (locals and tourists alike) to be the jewel in the North Shore’s crown. While you can drive to Devonport, for the ultimate experience the only way to go is by ferry. Only ten minutes away from downtown Auckland across the stunning Waitemata Harbour, you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to great things to do in Devonport. One of the most unique ways to explore Devonport is on a guided Segway tour operated by Magic Broomstick Tours. You’ll learn about the unique history and culture of the area, as well as taking in the sights and having a whole load of fun while riding around.

Climb Mount Victoria

Known to native Maori as Takarunga, Mount Victoria is the highest volcano on the North Shore. You can climb to the summit in an easy walk that will take 10-20 minutes. From the top you will be rewarded with fantastic views of the North Shore, Rangitoto Island and the Waitemata Harbour. Keep a look out for the famous painted mushrooms at the summit (which are actually ventilation ducts) as well as former military bunkers and artillery pieces.

Take The North Shore Coastal Walk

One of the best things to do on the North Shore – especially if you’ve come to New Zealand for great walks and hikes – is explore the North Shore Coastal Walk track. The full walk is over 23km long, and will take approximately seven hours. This full track isn’t suitable for families with young children, but if you are a keen walker then taking the full North Shore Coastal Walk is something you do not want to miss. What makes the walkway such a fantastic North Shore activity is that it can be tackled in sections. There are numerous entry and exit points throughout the entire walkway; one of the most popular sections is the walk between Milford Beach and Takapuna Beach.
