The Nelson region of New Zealand is home to a thriving viticulture industry, the gentle rolling slopes of the surrounding valleys and hillsides and the impressive number of sunshine hours have developed a proven reputation as some of New Zealand’s best wine growing country.

Neudorf Vineyards are a family-owned and operated winery offering a very ‘Kiwi’ take on classic European wine varieties. A focus on organics and sustainability during the wine making process has led to the development of quality fruit and a range of intense but elegant world class wines.

Neudorf Country

Situated at the tip of the South island, Nelson’s best wine making country lays nestled between the Tasman Sea in the north, the Southern Alps to the south, with the Kahurangi National Park and the Mount Richmond Forest Park making up the western and eastern borders. Neudorf Vineyards are located in what is known as the Upper Moutere Valley area, approximately half an hour’s drive west from Nelson central.

Neudorf Vineyards draws upon five different vineyards or plantings; These include the original 5.43 hectare Home Block, at 138 Neudorf Road, the 4.32 hectare “paddock next door” named Tom’s Block, Rosie’s Block around the corner on Rosedale Road (7.76 hectares) and a few kilometres away – the privately owned Flaxmore Block at 5.77 hectares and the Haycock Road Block at 5.10 hectares totaling 28.38 hectares altogether.

Nelson Wine Growing

The Nelson region boasts some of New Zealand’s highest sunshine hours year round with warm dry summers and relatively mild winters with very few frosts. Fairly consistent rainfall throughout the year means good ground moisture levels are maintained at reasonable levels, even during the summer.

Harvest is usually anywhere from mid March to late April at Neudorf Vineyards, and as part of the vineyard management programme, is done carefully by hand along with manual shoot thinning and positioning, leaf removal and bunch thinning.

Organic Certification

Although following sustainable practises since its inception in the 80’s, Neudorf Vineyards have been moving towards full organic BioGro Certification in recent years. The process takes three years in total and involves yearly audits and rigorous vineyard management plans with no synthetic fungicides or herbicides allowed near the vineyards or fruit. Soil tests are required to confirm there are little or no chemical residues remaining before complete certification can be given.

The Neudorf Vineyard wine making philosophy relies on building a thriving environment encouraging healthy soils and strong plantations that promote a sense of balance – “leaving the land in a better state than we found it”.

Onsite recycling of grape skins, seeds and wood chips into valuable compost provides excellent natural fertiliser as well as a haven for much needed worms to thrive. A small flock of sheep are used to keep the grass under the vines in check, while “Dry Farming” methods mean the vines root systems are forced to dig deep to find moisture resulting in enhanced fruit flavours and drought resistance.

The Neudorf wine range combines the principles of dry farming, wild fermentation, minimal (if any) fining and vegan friendly practises to the majority of their wines which includes Chardonnay, Riesling, Albariño, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Rose and Pinot Noir. Cellar Door Sales

The Neudorf Cellar Door is open every day from 11am till 5 pm across the summer months, offering a select range of premium wines available for tasting. Purchase a cheese platter or take along a picnic and enjoy the tranquil surrounds on a warm summers day.

Visitors are encouraged to make the most of the sheltered tables on the lawn while enjoying beautiful views overlooking the winery.

Getting There

By rental car from the Nelson Airport the trip to Neudorf Vineyards takes about 30 minutes. Drivers head southwest out of Nelson towards Richmond, turning off at the Appleby Highway (60) following this along as it becomes The Coastal Highway.

Just past Mapua take the Gardner Valley Road turn off, following this until it intersects with the Moutere Highway, turn left here. Neudorf Road is the second on the right as drivers head towards Upper Moutere.
