In 1849 surveyors set sail from England and arrived in New Zealand in the lower South Island to choose a site for Christchurch. After viewing the fertile land farmed by the Deans brothers at Riccarton, the present site was decided on and in 1850 the first settlers began arriving. Slowly the land made up of swamp and sand hills grew over the many years into present day Christchurch. Some of the beautiful old stone buildings from that era are still standing today and are recognised as having historic value.

The most prominent is Christchurch Cathedral, which sits proudly in the centre of the city. Others located around Christchurch are Christ's College which is still in use today, another is Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament which opens daily from 9 – 4 pm.

Present day Christchurch and all that it has to offer is very different from other New Zealand cities and is constantly referred to as the 'Garden City'. Christchurch is a diverse place offering a variety of eateries, social bars and cafés to sip a short black or Latte. Once you have your rental car try the Slingshot bungy at New Brighton Mall, or try hot air ballooning to watch the sun rise over snow capped mountains.

The Antarctic centre is well situated just a 5 minute drive from our rental car office. Set aside 2 hours for The Antarctic centre and try the Hagglund ride or play in the indoor snow and ice.

With your Christchurch rental cars you can visit to Willowbank and view the kiwi and other introduced animals. Also at Christchurch is Orana Wild life Park. Hand feed the giraffe, view the lions and keep your distance from the massive rhino. If it is a slower pace you're after, punting on the Avon river could be just the treat.
