The third largest and longest lake in New Zealand, Lake Wakatipu is located in Queenstown and is renowned for it’s scenic alpine beauty. The region is home to a number of historic, scenic and adventure activities, all easily accessible with an affordable hire car.

A large glacier lake with an unusual lightening bolt shape, the shores of Wakatipu experience a strange rise and fall in water level of around 12 cm every five minutes, creating a tidal effect. There is lots of fishing to be had on the lake, including rainbow trout and salmon, making it a popular destination for fly fishers. For the more adventurous, jet skiing and wakeboarding will get your pulse racing.
A vintage steamship offers a turn-of-the-century travel experience while exploring the lake and delivering goods to small remote settlements on the other sides of the lake. An on-board café and bar provides refreshment as you glide across the waters on the TSS Earnslaw, one of the last coal-fired passenger boats to remain operating anywhere in the southern hemisphere.
Queenstown is also home to many outdoor activities, including hiking and walking, mountain biking, horse treks and world class skiing in winter. Thrill seekers can try bungy jumping, canyon swinging, river surfing, rafting or jet boating, or head to the skies on a parapenting (paragliding) adventure to get a unique view of Lake Wakatipu and the spectacular Remarkables mountain range. Kids can enjoy countless family friendly activities and attractions including Alpine Aqualand, the Skyline Luge and the Kiwi Birdlife Park.
