With its high levels of sunshine and low winter frosts, the climate of the Marlborough region at the top of the South Island is perfect for growing and harvesting grapes. It’s home to over 140 wineries, many with world-class reputations and spectacular wines to try and buy. Getting around is easy with a hire car as you can enjoy the scenic beauty of the land as you drive between venues. Just remember to have a sober driver on hand!
The Marlborough fruit produces a unique flavour and smell that is in demand both locally and internationally. In fact 79% of New Zealand’s total wine production takes place here, including world-class Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay among others.
Pick up a wine tour pamphlet from one of the local Information Centres, and then drive to whichever vineyards are open for visitors at that time. Some also have excellent cafés or restaurants on site, and make the perfect place to stop for a rest. Wine tasting is also quite common, as are tours of the vineyard and shops where you can purchase the finest wines straight from the source.
Marlborough isn’t just about wine, the region is home to the famous Marlborough Sounds, an intricate network of waterways offering a spectacular scenic adventure for water lovers. You can take a cruise, go kayaking, swim with dolphins and much more. If you like to walk, trek by horse or get on your mountain bike, Queen Charlotte Track offers unrivaled coastal views, spectacular native wildlife and historical landmarks, stretching 70km from historic Ship Cove to picturesque Anakiwa.
If you love art, culture and a more relaxing pace, head to Blenheim, Marlborough’s largest town and home to many attractive parks and gardens, art galleries, a theatre and plenty of great restaurants, cafés and shops.
Need transportation to make the most of the region? Our handy Blenheim car rental branch offers a great range of affordable rental cars so you can relax and explore the best of Marlborough and beyond at your leisure.
