Road Trip: Christchurch to Queenstown

No phrase makes the hairs on the back of our neck stand up like ‘south island road trip’. Just like America’s Route 66 or Australia’s Great Ocean Road, our very own sunny, snowy and mountainous south island has all the ingredients for a life-changing experience on the open road. Hire a safe and affordable car rental from us, in order to discover yourself in nature with coastal roads, wildlife and many a mountain pass from Christchurch to Queenstown.

Pack light, plan your route and hit these five unmissable locations when heading south for the journey of a lifetime. Here’s our guide to a memorable road trip.

Lake Tekapo

From Christchurch, you’ll drive south down Highway 1, hugging the east coast. Your first stop should see you cut inland to Lake Tekapo, a peaceful township with wonderful 360° landscapes. Whilst here, enjoy the pristine Lake, local hot springs and enjoy stargazing from the timeless Church of the Good Shepherd.

Mount Cook

Keep on heading west for one of the most jaw-dropping roads in New Zealand, Mount Cook Road. Follow this to reach the Southern Alps and the highest mountain in the country. Get up close and personal by hiking the incredible Hooker Valley Track before heading off on your way.

Wanaka

As one of the hottest (not literally) tourist attractions in New Zealand, Wanaka has much to offer in the form of beauty, bars, restaurants, shopping and arguably New Zealand’s most famous landmark to photograph. The Wanaka tree sits in the shallows of the lake giving the appearance of it floating on the water.

Lake Dunstan

This man-made lake and reservoir has a new feature. The Lake Dunstan trail has recently opened a four-section walking and cycling trail that stretches 55km alongside the Lake, the Kawarau River and the Clutha River. A beautiful way to explore Central Otago, steeped in history from the days of the gold rush, enjoy this great ride and stop at Burger Afloat, New Zealand’s only floating burger bar along the way. Hire a station wagon or SUV with us to fit a few bikes in the back.

Gibson Valley

After all that driving and exercise, chances are you’ll be parched. Stop at one of Gibson Valley’s many wineries to enjoy local wine and produce in a heavenly setting. Take a wine tour or book a wine tasting for a perfect end to an epic road trip.
