Car Hire in NZ for Hong Kong Visitors
Travelling to New Zealand from Hong Kong? NZ Rent A Car has been helping international visitors explore both islands for over 30 years. Hong Kong drivers will find New Zealand familiar in some ways (we drive on the left, like you do at home) and very different in others. This page covers what you need to know to hire a car with confidence.
What Hong Kong Visitors Need for Car Hire in NZ
The licence rules for Hong Kong visitors depend on whether your licence is in English.
- A full Hong Kong driver's licence printed in English is accepted without an International Driving Permit
- If your licence is Chinese-only, you need an International Driving Permit or a certified English translation
- The minimum age is 21 years
- A credit card (Visa, MasterCard or Amex) in the name of the driver is required at pick-up
- All drivers, including additional drivers, present their licence at the branch
Our online booking system confirms vehicle availability and any branch-specific requirements before you pay.
Driving in NZ Compared to Hong Kong
New Zealand drives on the left, the same as Hong Kong, so the side of the road will feel natural. A few things do change once you leave the city.
- Open road speed limit is 100 km/h, urban areas are 50 km/h
- New Zealand roads are often narrow, winding, and bordered by open countryside rather than dense buildings
- Many South Island rural roads have single-lane bridges and gravel sections
- Distances are much larger than in Hong Kong; plan for longer drives between towns
- Drink-driving laws are strictly enforced, with zero tolerance for drivers under 20
For more detail, see our Driving Safely in NZ guide.
Pick-Up from Auckland and Key Arrival Airports
Hong Kong flights to New Zealand typically land at Auckland Airport, and we have a branch right there.

- Christchurch and Queenstown for South Island arrivals
- Auckland Central, Auckland North Shore, Dunedin, Picton, Blenheim, Nelson and Greymouth branches for trips further afield
One-way rentals between branches let you fly into one city and out of another.
