If you’re heading to Dunedin and want to discover some great things to do that won’t cost a penny in admission fees or ticket prices, then we’ve got you covered. These free Dunedin attractions are some of the most enjoyable things to do in and around the area – plan your itinerary around them and save big.

Visit St Clair Beach

Dunedin is well-known for its excellent beaches, despite its reputation for having a less-than-tropical climate for much of the year. Blending breathtaking coastal scenery with seemingly unending swathes of sand, a summertime trip to a Dunedin beach is always a great way to enjoy a day out that won’t cost you much at all. One of the best beach choices in Dunedin is St Clair. St Clair Beach features a promenade lined with great cafes and eateries, as well as pristine white sands and a popular hot salt water pool. You catch some great surf at St Clair beach, as well as taking lessons if you’re a beginner.

Take In Dunedin’s Architecture anglican church 225x300 - Free Dunedin Attractions

Dunedin is famed for its eclectic blend of Victorian and Edwardian architecture, making it one of the most visually appealing cities in New Zealand. There are a number of buildings of particular note, all of which can at least be viewed externally for free. Highlights of any good Dunedin architecture tour include the Speight’s Brewery, Larnach Castle, Olveston House, St Paul’s Cathedral, and the immense Dunedin Railway Station.

Marvel At Baldwin Street

The steepest street in the world is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Dunedin, and it’s totally free to visit. At over 350m long it takes an average of ten minutes to climb the 1:2.86 grade. Whereas most streets in New Zealand are finished in asphalt, Baldwin Street is covered in concrete as asphalt would actually roll down the steep incline on a warm day. The street plays host to some notable charity events, including the Baldwin Street Gutbuster – a grueling sprint from the bottom of the street to the top and back down again. If you park on Baldwin street, then make sure to leave your handbrake on!

Explore Otago Peninsula

With your trusty rental car from the Dunedin NZ Rent A Car branch, you’re perfectly poised to explore the beautiful, striking Otago Peninsula in all its glory. Just fill your car up and drive to your heart’s content. From Dunedin city you can strike out east to Sandfly Bay, Hoopers Inlet, and Papanui Inlet. Keep an eye out for native flora and fauna, especially the famous yellow-eyed penguin (hoiho). It’s only a short drive from the city to the peninsula, including the quaint Portobello village and Larnach Castle.
